Mugshot Interview

Mark southerland repairs musical instruments for a living, and makes his own from the heaps of used parts, mostly amalgamations of the saxophone. My favorite is the Hosiphone, where he blows into a reed connected to a hose that he swings around his head.

DOVEBELLY: My instruments allow me to improvise and add colors that I otherwise couldn't. I think originality is a huge part of my musicianship. creating things with my friends is infinitely more important than recreating something.

MUGSHOT: What are your future plans?

DOVEBELLY:The '79 Cadillac is about to become a crash 'em up Derby car. I now drive an '84 Country Squire, the first soccer mom car. I have my eyes on a 1970 Cadillac Sedan Deville by the name of Chocolate Chip.

Dovebelly's music sounds something like Ornette Coleman, Madlib's Yesterdays, New Quintet, RJD2, and John Coltrane all eating a sandwich together. The ensemble consists of Aaron Osborne on Fender Jazz bass, synth, and Syndrums, Shane Whitsitt on a MPC 2000 sampler, and Sterling Holman on macro sound manipulations and effects. Their incredible debut compact disc on their indie label has some of the most exquisite hand-pressed packaging I have ever seen.
