Mugshot Interview

MUGSHOT: You have a longstanding tradition with Cadillacs and 8-tracks. What are the roots of this story?

DOVEBELLY: A 1979 Cadillac named 'Marsell. Every owner or long-trip passenger got obsessed with 8-tracking. I was hit with the fever. From collecting to looping to disassembling - to an entire new way of using 8-tracks, scratching

MUGSHOT: They call you and your ensemble TJ Dovebelly. We know the TJ stands for Tape Jockey, but explain this medium you've morphed?

DOVEBELLY: Tape Jockeying is the not-so-distant cousin of turntablism. I bust open 8-track tapes and rearrange their innards so I can scratch them across the heads of old players. I also use a traditional DJ mixer to cut with. for a while, my whole setup was Radio Shack old Realistic players and an Optimus mixer.

MUGSHOT: How did your ensemble form and who are these gentlemen you play with?

DOVEBELLY: I began TJ'ing with [Kansas City staple out-jazz group] Malachy Papers initially as a solo gig at YJ's Snack Bar. Slowly, each member coalesced into the band today.

Yes. YJ's really is a snack bar. There is enough room for six very small people to stand inside while a musician is performing. You can get one hell of a sandwich though, and I'm not talking about Sloppy Joes from a can here - there are some serious home-cooked vittles
